About the Show
Funny Women’s annual charity night on International Women’s Day, Monday 8th March, supports V-Day’s spotlight campaign to end rape in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Featuring an exceptional line-up of comedy including impressionist Jan Ravens of BBC’s Dead Ringers, and the sharp wit of Shazia Mirza. Hosted by the irrepressible Mrs Barbara Nice (Janice Connolly) with performances by Miss London winner of the 2009 Funny Women Awards, and past winners Suzy Bennett, Andi Osho & Katherine Ryan. Sketches from Domestic Goddi, Carrie Quinlan, Deborah Frances-White and Fordham & Pilkington, plus music from Leisa Rea, cabaret from Circularity Thinking and special guests.
Part of a box-fresh festival to celebrate International Women’s Day 2010. Running from 8th to 20th March it plays host to a programme of cultural activities based at the New Players Theatre. The festival has been conceived by the producers of V-Day London 2008 and 2009, and is part of the global V-Day movement to end violence against women and girls in which local artists produce events and performances to raise awareness and funds.
In the last two years the festival has featured innovative re-imaginings of the controversial classic The Vagina Monologues and the new collection A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer, by writer, campaigner and V-Day founder Eve Ensler.
The festival showcases fantastic feminine and feminist talent for an action-packed two weeks, and aims to encourage discussion about all aspects of violence against women, including gender, sexuality, identity, equality and more in a lavish and experimental playground of fancy.
The Funny Women Gala is part of See You Next Tuesday festival
